TimeOut Kuala Lumpur's Preview - Jan 2009

Previews - Endless Love (Timeout KL 2009)

There is something earthy and nostalgic about Khor Wei Kiang's Art. Heavily accented with Malay and Chinese motifs such as Kampung houses, coconut trees and fish, his work reminiscent of days gone by, simpler times and oddly, tribaland aboriginal art.

Born in Sungai Petani, this Kedah native attended Kuala Lumpur College of Fine Art in 1993 and obtain his diploma. Currently the resident artist for Pucuk Rebung in KLCC, he has participated in more than 30 prestigious art exhibitions since 1994. His work apparently has strong international appeal and is showcased in Countries such as Japan, Korea, Middle East, the UK and the USA.

His collection, 'Endless Love - The Fish Series' features intricately-decorated fish in Picasso-style colouring with bold, strong lines: simple yet complex, childishly straigh forward and a little crude. His trademark medium, the gunny, complements the down to earth style of his art perfectly. Although not really extraordinally or jaw-dropping, this artist collection boasts some very compelling pieces that will probably interest hardcore art enthusiasts.

The Fish Series

My memories of childhood in rural Malaysia inspire both my approach to painting and my artistic choices of subject and materials. These memories, dreams, feelings, provoke fantasies which reawaken my childlike innocence and sense of wonder at the natural world. The brilliant and thick impasto of rich, vibrant colour spreading across my trademark medium, the gunnysack (a distinctively Malaysian fabric), is an affirmation of my love for authentically rustic material; the perfect medium upon which to give life to my artistic instinct. Each painting is unique but unmistakably in the "naive style" which is synonymous with my work.Delightfully vivid, densely textured, and as alluring to the touch as to the eye; each piece is a sensual exploration of happiness, happiness given form and colour. For me, this naive approach to art is the natural expression of a magical sense of wonder. A magical sense of wonder that is my companion as I explore the natural topography of my childhood through each new painting. Every time I create a new piece it is both a celebration of, and a homage to, the sights, sounds and fragrances of my childhood.

Yours
